The Anatomy of a System Prompt That Actually Works
A practical breakdown of what strong system prompts do differently, and why vague roleplay prompts usually fall apart.

Problem
A practical breakdown of what strong system prompts do differently, and why vague roleplay prompts usually fall apart.
Decision
Decide what context, method, and review should survive beyond one run.
Next step
Test the idea once, inspect the result, then package only what proved useful.
Most system prompts fail because they confuse atmosphere with instruction. The model gets a persona, a tone adjective, and very little operational guidance.
A good system prompt reads more like a contract. It defines the job, the boundaries, the output shape, and what to do when the input is weak.
Role is not the job
Telling the model it is an expert marketer or world-class strategist sounds useful. Usually it is not. Titles create mood. Jobs create behaviour.
Start with the real task. What is this system supposed to do repeatedly. What should it avoid. What format must it return.
The output contract does the heavy lifting
If you care about structure, say so before generation starts. Headings, sections, JSON shape, length boundaries. All of it belongs in the contract.
This is where reliability comes from. Not from shouting helpful assistant in slightly different ways.
Quality checks are underrated
A final self-review stage catches common failure modes cheaply. Repetition. Vague claims. Missed constraints. Hallucinated certainty.
Models do not naturally stop and inspect their work. You have to tell them to.
